Record Store Day 2015: 5 Most Interesting Releases

ESTIMATED

Since 2008, Record Store Day has been celebrated by independent record stores — primarily in the US and UK, but has since reached out to our side of the world in the past few years. While the main point of establishing RSD is to encourage a culture of appreciating physical formats, it has also been the day when labels churn out exclusive, limited edition vinyl that run the gamut from fascinating to perplexing.

Last year was pretty awesome, from an exhaustively comprehensive LCD Soundsystem boxset to "the fastest released record ever". While that was a good year, this year promises even more mouth-watering exclusives. Here are five records that hold such a distinction.

BANDWAGON TV

BRAND NEW | DEJA ENTENDU

Long out of print and sought after by many fans and record collectors, the seminal second album by alternative rock band Brand New will finally be reprinted. While the album will get a full retail release on regular vinyl on May 5, there will be a special limited Record Store Day edition — housed in a paper bag with inserts that include a lyric book, a patch and stickers. No other information but honestly, at this point everyone just wants the damn record.

THE WHITE STRIPES | GET BEHIND ME SATAN

It's weird to think a White Stripes album missed out a vinyl pressing, especially looking at how fervent a vinyl fanatic Jack White is. Alas, up until recently, Get Behind Me Satan had the unusual distinction of not being released on the format commercially. With RSD, that's about to change. Third Man Records announced an RSD edition of Get Behind Me Satan, which will be pressed on two LPs — one red and one white, with a lenticular cover to boot. Like Deja Entendu, there'll be a regular release later in the year but if you're a Jack White diehard, you should know you can't miss out on this.

F*CK THE POLICE | J DILLA

The timeless, politically-charged anthem by the late J Dilla will be getting a special release come RSD — in the form of, ironically, a badge. Pressed on a police badge-shaped 9" picture disc, it'll feature both the original single and the instrumental. You know, in case you want to stick it to the man yourself...in your room with your turntable...at a reasonable volume.

FATHER JOHN MISTY | I LOVE YOU, HONEYBEE

In case you're missing out, Father John Misty put out one of 2015's best albums so far with I Love You, Honeybear — a lush, grandiose record with painfully earnest and witty lyrics. For RSD, he'll be releasing an alternative version of the album's strikingly symphonic title track along with an unreleased B-side. Best part? It'll be on a heart-shaped red 10" record.

RED HOUSE PAINTERS BOXSET

It's safe to say Record Store Day is killing it this year in the reissue department. Slowcore pioneers Red House Painters will have their first four albums re-released as a lavish but strictly limited boxset, with only 1500 copies and all on bronze vinyl. With the original presses sporting unreasonably luxurious prices, this is truly a miracle as the albums will also be released individually after RSD.
